An article in Lightwave notes Nortel's strong F.O. growth:

Nortel's optical business unit is also continuing to move ahead at a record pace, but is still unable to satisfy all the demand that customers are putting on the company, said Roth. Nortel plans to rectify the situation as quickly as possible. "We're closing the gap on the shortages to our customers...but the expansions that we announced late last year are not going to come onstream until late this quarter and into the second quarter," acknowledged Roth. "So we will not fully catch up with the demand until we're through these next two quarters. But we are making good headway."

In North America and Europe, where DWDM-based fiber-optic networks are being rapidly deployed, the need for optical switching systems will create a 5-year, $31-billion market opportunity for vendors of optical switching systems. In North America, the market for these systems will expand from a projected $427 million 2000 to over $10 billion in 2004. In Europe, the market is forecast to grow from $116 million in 2000 to over $4 billion in 2004.

And from our friends at Corning:

Corning, New York, January 27, 2000 -- Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today it is increasing the manufacturing capability of its Marlborough, Massachusetts, facility, in order to expand and enhance the company?s ability to produce the thin film optical filters and photonic devices used in advanced, broadband communications networks.
As a result of the expansion, Corning will increase shipments of 200 GHz and 100 GHz thin film filter-based Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) devices. Corning said the additional capacity is necessary to meet increasing market demand for its photonic components.

The expansion includes new equipment and technology for DWDM thin-film filter manufacturing. The new equipment, coupled with other process improvements, is expected to increase the plant?s filter production by ten times over its current capability. The on-going increase in throughput is expected to be fully on line in the second half of 2000.

?This latest expansion is further evidence of Corning?s investment in optical components,? said Gerry Fine, vice president and general manager of Corning?s Photonic Technologies Division. ?We are committed to being a world-leading ?optical layer? company,? Fine continued, ?an integrated supplier of a broad range of photonic and opto-electronic products that will enable the development and eventual deployment of the all optical network.?
