douglas, a compound semi is a semi made of different chemical elements: SI is a normal semi, because it's just silica. But SiGe is a compound semi as is GaAs, InP, CdTe, GaN, InGaN, InGaAs, InGaP etc.. All got differnt properties, many are highly toxic and thus difficult to produce. This market niche is growing like crazy right now and has many advantages over silica based devices: lower heat dissipation and higher usable spectral areas. This is the reason why you neeed InGaAs or InGaP for APDs (avalanche photodiodes) to be usable for the DWDM spectral area (1300-1800nm) regards CROSSY
