My attack is to own core companies like Lucent that I am confident will be here long term and then try to anticipate what sectors will be ahead in the next thirty years that have the opportunity to last or be purchased. I am ever mindful that there were lots of computer companies out there that went belly up, even though everyone knew computers were the wave of the future. I took a basket approach on the internet (CMGI and ICGE) and a bet that DWDM and photonics will be the wave of the future (JDSU). I am long CSCO and MSFT and really dont even check the prices anymore. They are another of the sleep soundly sort of stock that, if not as sexy as some others, add to the bottom line every year.

I know (family members are a ever present reminder) that my approach will not make me a million overnight, but it is clear that it will in a few years, and by retirement I will be asking the one day spouse which house she wants to visit this week!

Hope you hit the 5 year window AND have no need to draw on the principle. With a 5 year horizon I would be tempted to pick up MO with a 10% yield and sell options. The combined return ought to net well in excess of 30% per year.
