Is it valid to say that a company benefits from its operations only from its "free cash flow". It seems to me that if free cash flow is the amount of cash beyond what is required to sustain the operation, that's all there is.

The reason I ask is that I am interested in a company that has a percentage stake in the "free cash flow" of another company. I'm wondering whether in practical terms that means the company is in an even better position than a full participant for it enjoys all the benefits with none of the risks.
