I believe that Athlon first taped out by Q3 98.

It took them 1 yr+ to introduce due to bugs etc.

It will indeed be impressive if Willy see's first silicon shortly and reaches production by Q3 2000 at speeds > 1Ghz as alleged.

In addition Merced seems somewhat in trouble.

Allegedly they are far short of the 800Mhz speeds required at intro.

Seeing as 32 bits apps will be emulated and run at 70-80% efficency we are possibly looking at performance inferior to an AThlon 800 at intro.
