SOI Athlons when?

SOI (Silicon on Insulator) improves the clock frequency by 25% or more while lowering the power consumption. I have seen the switch to SOI on the Motorola PowerPC Roadmap for H2 2000. SOI is completely ignored by INTC and Intel will not use SOI in anywhere in the nearby future...

see for instance:

semiconductor-intl.com

"Nothing else can address low-power and high-speed requirements for logic as well as SOI," contends Dr. Witek Maszara, senior member of technical staff at AMD. As gate oxides scale below 30 , channel lengths to 100 nm and operating voltages to 1.5 V, industry leaders see a slowdown in bulk silicon's performance while SOI exhibits a 20% to 35% edge, equivalent to 1.5 bulk generations or 2 years of bulk CMOS technologies. A microprocessor that performs at 800 MHz speeds in bulk silicon can perform at 1 GHz in SOI.

Motorola roadmap: mot.com

beware:
0.15 micron process is 0.25 micron process with 0.15 micron effective gate length.
0.10 micron process is 0.18 micron process with 0.10 micron effective gate length. (The Dresden copper Athlon process)
