Clark,

Re: WCDMA (NTT DoCoMo)

<< Translation: We don't even have a standard yet, and in fact we aren't likely to decide on one soon, but we need to show progress. Or to put it more succinctly - "Ready, fire, aim!" >>

Are you implying that the IMT-2000 standards for the evolved ANSI-41 based 3G standards will be completed before those of those for evolved GSM (MAP) networks?

The ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector, under the leadership of Study Group 11 chaired by Dr Sadahiko Kano (Japan), is saying:

>> "Study Group 11 has a track record for professional protocol products with a speed that satisfies the ever-changing industry needs" said Dr Kano. "With the deployment of IMT-2000 networks in 2001, the time-frame to complete all network specifications is a daunting task" he said. "We are confident that we can live up to the challenge of the task and come up with the required specifications by the end of the year 2000 through a very aggressive work plan that calls upon the cooperation of all players", he added. <<

Note that the statements made in the Nokia Discovery article are a bit dated. There are some more updated articles on the section of the NTT DoCoMo website devoted to W-CDMA & Mobile Multimedia:

I for one hope that they meet their launch date. It should turn on the Q royalty stream for 3G (standardized or not standardized). I am of course thinking positively and assuming that IPR issues will be settled by the time they launch.
