The almost 100 year long Klu Klux Klan reign of terror, which wrapped itself in the majesty of the battle flag is one big reason that the flag is held in such contempt, another reason is the modern use of the flag to promote the political position promoting "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever."

Much as you and others may wish that those things had not happened, the fact is that they did - and for a lot longer time than the original civil war. For most people, that flag long ago ceased being a symbol of anything but hate and bigotry. No left wing PC pundits forced the KKK and the preachers of that hate and bigotry to use it for the last 100 years. Salute it if you will, remember your glorious dead ancestors, but don't expect the rest of us to follow suit, and don't ask us to sanction it through continued government recognition.
