You probably know this- I can't remember it very well- but I saw a documentary on the South that included a portion on all the white groups that arose in the period after the union army left the South- a period that was a nadir for Southern Blacks- and I believe lynchings reached an all time high during that period. If I recall correctly there were 100's of groups- not the KKK, but groups like the KKK - and these were strictly Southern outfits. I don't remember anything involving the Confed Flag, actually- but I was amazed at how many hate groups there were.
