U.S. States Probing America Online Billing: Washington Post

WASHINGTON (AP-Dow Jones)--U.S. computer online service America Online Inc. said Wednesday it 'has had a dialogue' with the New York state attorney general's office about its billing practices, The Washington Post reports Thursday.

The Post quotes American Online as saying 'it is our understanding that several state attorney general offices have informally inquired into industry (billing) practices.'

America Online said it is working with legislators and others in the industry to clarify and underscore the importance of consumers rights in cyberspace, the report says.

The New York newspaper Newsday Wednesday cited an unnamed source in that state's attorney general's office as saying a 'formal investigation' of American Online had begun and was looking to see if the company inappropriately overcharged consumers for time spent online.

- Newsday also reported that there are lawsuits against American Online concerning billing issues, and The Post says American Online executives declined comment on the reports.
