Fides, the news agency of the Vatican's missionary arm, said the priests had effectively been "kidnapped" by police. Six bishops had "disappeared" in the past three years. The report was the latest in a series of criticisms of Beijing. The agency said the oppression was part of a fresh campaign to force Catholics to profess loyalty to the official patriotic church and to sever ties with the Vatican. It said Catholic officials in Hong Kong believed "the Government is carrying out the directives included in a secret document" prepared last August.
