Gore Fund-Raiser Goes on Trial In Temple Donations Case

A longtime fund-raiser for Vice President Gore and the Democratic Party goes on trial this week, as Bill Bradley is questioning Gore's truthfulness regarding dubious fund-raising practices during the 1996 presidential campaign.

Maria Hsia is accused of disguising contributions to the Clinton-Gore campaign and other politicians starting in 1993 and ending in 1996, when she allegedly steered thousands of dollars in illegal donations from a Buddhist temple through "straw" donors.

Hsia has pleaded not guilty.

Gore attended the April 29, 1996, temple event in Hacienda Heights, Calif., but says he didn't know it was a fund-raising event. On various occasions, he has said he thought it was community outreach, finance-related and donor maintenance.

Two prospective witnesses, both Buddhist nuns, left the United States and are in Taiwan. U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman, has issued bench warrants for their arrest and prosecutors said they will seek indictments for criminal contempt if they don't return.

Both nuns had agreed to cooperate with the Justice Department probe in exchange for immunity from prosecution.
