I very much appreciate these comments on strangles and straddles by a real pro. I reasoned that a straddle has either a bullish bias or a bearish bias according to whether the strike is above the current price or below. If you enter the position according to your sentiment, with the ability to restore or maintain whatever bias (delta) you may desire through minimal hedging, the strategy sounded quite conservative. The straddle itself might be inflexible, but what you can do with the straddle in the background (I thought) makes it anything but inflexible.
