India's Software Market Seen At $8.85 Bln By End Mar 2001

BOMBAY (Dow Jones)--The National Association of Software and Services Cos. said Tuesday that the Indian information technology software and services market is expected to grow to $8.85 billion in the year ending March 31, 2001.

This will consist of $6.32 billion in software exports and $2.53 billion in revenues from the domestic market.

The software industry is projected to earn $5.7 billion in the current year ending March 31, which is a growth of approximately 50% over the previous figure of $3.9 billion, Dewang Mehta, president of the National Association of Software said at a press conference.

"We expect the first international gateway for private Internet service providers to be operational by June 2000, which will result in a dramatic increase in Internet usage and connectivity in the country," Mehta said.

According to the association's survey, Internet connections are projected to go up to 1.4 million from the current 610,000 connections, and Internet users are expected to increase to five million by March 31, 2001, from the current 2.1 million.

Separately, Desh Deshpande, chairman and founder of Sycamore Networks Inc. said that he plans to enter the Indian software business via either a joint venture or selling of the software product technology to Indian businesses in the year 2000.

Deshpande said that the Sycamore technology can provide the backbone for selling bandwidth for Indian e-commerce trade, research and development, professional services including offering design networks and software talent. -0- 01/02/00 13-35G
