(February 18, 1997)NEC Electronics Inc. today announced two additions to its laser diode family, a 635-nanometer (nm) visible laser diode (VLD) and a 650nm VLD, both targeting the emerging digital versatile disk (DVD) and DVD-ROM markets. In addition, the devices will target bar code scanners, laser printers and laser pointers.

Playing off the strength of its parent company NEC Corporation, one of the first suppliers of optical components to DVD systems manufacturers, NEC Electronics is aggressively pursuing this exciting new market. Industry insiders and analysts predict DVD will be big business. According to Dataquest senior industry analyst Mary
Bourdon, "as prices for DVD-ROM hit the $100 OEM price point, migration away from CD-ROM will begin. By the year 1999, DVD-ROM will represent a majority of the market."

"We see a lot of potential for NEC in the DVD market," said Chris Jensen, product marketing engineer at NEC Electronics. "With the operating characteristics of our new device, and the fact that NEC is one of the leading semiconductor manufacturers in the world, we are entering the market early so we can grow with it as it expands."
