Russ: The rumour was for $45 takeover by HWP. And not everyone laughed it off. Some people discuss things without waiting for approval from head office.

Capellas failure to scotch the rumour may also be due to his "clumsiness". I get the feeling that he went into the interview determined to put his story across and the question threw him. A seasoned CEO would have said something like Lynn suggested.
