OK, how about this then. What companies other than Microsoft and Intel do you think could have unified PC software and hardware, to the point of making home PCs as incredibly affordable as they are, to hundreds of millions of people? Apple egoed themselves out of it. IBM, forget it. TI, blew it. Compaq, lost it. Motorola, National, Xilog, who else, never were in it. We needed two companies led by paranoid CEOs like gates and Grove to pull it off. Otherwise, home PCs might be like in the 80's...no standard. So it crashes once in a while.
