McDroogies: That's true and it still shows up on floor plans, but "water closet" is no longer in common usage although "WC" is still heard from time to time.

In the forces it is known as "the latrines". Elsewhere "the bog" "the lavatory" "the lavvy" "the toilet" "the gents" or "the ladies" "the cloakroom" and, as I pointed out "the loo". When I was at a college where we were obliged to speak Latin all day, we called it "aqua secreta" - "hidden waters" which we shortened to "a-secs" because it sounded like "arse" which, as you probably know, is the English equivalent of "ass".

English people still find some American euphemisms funny: "comfort station" "powder room" "little house" "cottage" "rest room".
