People say kings often can make more money than gorillas over a considerable period. The same might be said for carefully selected gold mining stocks or for well located real estate bought at the bottom of a cycle. But who thinks that gold mines or real estate will on the average do as well as gorillas? I've never been happy holding Dell despite its stellar performance because I always wondered whether somebody in Taiwan couldn't pack components into a box also and do it just as well and cheaper. I remember IBM in the 1960-1977 period. 25% a year was normal. That was a gorilla! No competition. Microfsoft,CSCO,QCOM,INTC --- gorillas are few but their returns are marvelous. Recently I sold JDSU. I was more worried by it dropping 25% than I was about QCOM dropping in half. A GORILLA HELPS YOU SLEEP NIGHTS. Discontinuous innovation, proprietary architecture, value chain built around it, that's Buffett's moat!
