Exponent, here is my scoop

1. Market likes certainty. They are certain that AG & Co. will not raise rates anymore for "at least" another 6 months if they raise 50 basis points now. Besides, appreciate the fact that there are other sectors to consider than just the stock market. Housing, food etc. etc. A further rise in rates after 6 weeks beyond the current expected 50 basis points will adversely affect other industries. Hence the FED would be cautious if they have to raise rates further beyond 50 basis points for now.

2. Democrats like AG and Gore is AG's main supporter. Repubs. hate AG and continue to believe that he was responsible for George Bush's defeat in 1992. So AG would not do anything to upset the good economy and will do things so as to let us believe that times are good and "why change course" (the same battle cry that Bush used when Reagan was leaving). It was Paul Volker then and it is going to be Greenspan now.

So AG and Co. would want to be done for now and hence would want to provide one last major strike for the time being by way of a 50 basis point rise

That is IMHO.
