ERICSSON TO LAUNCH GPRS CELLPHONE AT END OF 2000 CANNES (Reuters) - Tuesday February 1 10:14 AM ET dailynews.yahoo.com Sweden's Ericsson, the world's third biggest cellphone maker, said on Tuesday it would launch the industry's first GPRS cellphone at the end of 2000, giving direct and improved access to the Web via a phone. ''We will launch GPRS phones at the end of the year and in volume they'll be available in early 2001,'' Jan Wareby, the new head of Ericsson's Consumer Products unit responsible for cellphones, told reporters at a GSM World Congress in Cannes. GPRS (general packet radio service), which boosts the speed at which data and voice messages can be sent over mobile networks, is an upgraded version of the current GSM and TDMA standards. GSM (global system for mobile communications) is used heavily in Europe, while TDMA (time division multiple access) is popular in the United States. Ericsson's GPRS phones will be based on the company's Internet R320 model -- due for release in coming months -- and also contain the Wireless Application (WAP) standard, which gives limited access to the Internet. GPRS-based phones will significantly speed up wireless data and improve WAP services. Many operators are already upgrading their networks with GPRS infrastructure. - Eric -
