Microsoft, EMC form joint marketing alliance

HOPKINTON, Mass., Feb 1 (Reuters) - Software giant Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O> and EMC Corp. <EMC.N>, a leader in high-capacity data storage equipment, on Tuesday said they had formed a joint marketing alliance for Windows 2000 storage systems.

The companies said they will develop and market storage networking products for the Windows NT server and Windows 2000 operating systems using storage systems, software, and services from EMC and its Data General division.

Financial terms of the alliance were not disclosed.

Shares of EMC were down 2-1/4 at 104-1/4 in trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Microsoft shares were up 3-7/16 at 101-5/16 in trade on the Nasdaq stock market.

The companies also will provide a ready-to-run operating system for Windows systems that is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses, using Data General's In-a-Box products.

Microsoft's Windows 2000 product is scheduled to be released Feb. 17.

As part of the alliance, Data General will offer the industry's first 99.9 percent availability guarantee for Windows 2000, the companies said. EMC completed the acquisition of Data General on Oct. 12.

EMC and Data General said they will train and certify 400 professionals as Microsoft-certified solutions developers and system engineers during the next 12 months.

Additionally the Data General division will provide global support to customers 24 hours a day, the companies said.
