A friend of mine who is politically attuned (now retired; he worked in the Australian Government at a senior level in a politically sensitive area) had the following to say about my offhand observation that Vladimir Putin had recently gained a doctorate from St Petersburg University in the unlikely area of strategic planning in the minerals industry. I remarked that this seemed a bit odd, and my friend made the following observations:

Putin by the account of his career in the IHT was a very busy boy in the Kremlin while he was supposed to research his doctorate.

Methinks he was helped out...

I suspect that the IHT writer thought so too.

But it is interesting that the subject matter was the minerals industry rather than Putin's claimed interest in private international law.

Perhaps the choice of the subject was vital to one or more of his 'supporters'. A great way in briefing Putin in depth to a particular point of view while at the same doing him a big favour by having 'his' thesis ghostwritten for him.

I found it amusing that his alma mater is anxious to suppress his thesis. Any other university, in any other country, would crow with pride that one of its alumni reached supreme political office and that he had chosen it to do his doctorate. Not in Russia apparently.

So, it seems likely that Putin's supporters have a long term interest in the Russian minerals industry. I feel that it would be very interesting to get a copy of the thesis - that way we would get some insight into developments in the Russian minerals industry.

So, if anyone is going near St Petersburg, drop into the University library and run the thesis through the photocopier!
