LUCENT FIRST WITH HANDSET LAUNCH

Lucent Technologies kicked off its appearance at the GSM World Congress today by unveiling what it claims is one of the world's first Class 8 General Packet Radio Service(GPRS) handsets - developed in conjunction with Samsung Electronics Co.

The company showed it pays to hold a press conference on the first afternoon of a show, as rumor has it that Motorola is set to announce its own GPRS handset tomorrow afternoon.

The Samsung handset is set to be introduced to the market this summer, said Luc Seraphin, regional president EMEA, Lucent Microelectronics - although whether this is for testing or sales was unclear. It remains to be seen whether operators will in fact have rolled-out GPRS networks in that timeframe.

Samsung used Lucent software and chipsets in the handset. A Class 8 handset can download data at rates of up to 56Kbps - equivalent to regular fixed line modems.

A lucent spokeswoman said that Samsung opted for this class of handset as it is ideal for accessing the Internet - which typically has more data flowing towards the user than to the network. The handset can be seen at Lucent's Microelectronics Group stand (C-2) and the Samsung stand (C-60) at the show.

Lucent also announced yesterday that Telecel, Portuguese mobile operator, had selected its Kenan System's billing solution. The operator will use the Arbor/BP software product for its paging, Internet and indirect fixed access services.
