That surprises me-- you strike me as a Latin kind of person (that's a good thing)-- what language did you study in high school? And did you continue the same in college?
I took six years and I believe it's greatly responsible for any facility with language that I have. One of my boys is in his third year now. He hates it, and says he's not learning anything, but his English PSATs were much higher than those of his friends. And several moms have said if they had it to do over, they would insist on the Latin. Overall, the French and Spanish courses don't seem to produce much competence- at least at our school.

I've been sorry to see Latin falling into unpopularity. I view its demise with the same trepidation that I do the decline of classical music in schools and churches. This is only my opinion (lest anyone want me to quote sources and proof) but it seems to me that education is becoming strangely shallow today, and that this leads to a type of shallow thinking, even among obviously bright people. The learning of Latin, the performance of a Bach Mass, the study of great art, these are disciplines whose results keep resonating throughout life.
Well, that was my speech for the day.
