Timing and Significance of HANIS

Steve first post said that the cards would be deployed in the second half of 2001, which is consistent with this post which says, "The first batch of identity cards are expected to be issued free of charge to the public in September next year."

"The Department of Home Affairs and Hanis' suppliers will load more than 40 million fingerprints onto a data base, making it the biggest of its kind in the world." I don't know if we are supplying livescanners and/or biometric smartcard readers, but it looks like this will start ramping up sometime next summer in order to be ready for the rollout. You will need a lot of Bio-ID readers to service 40 million smartcards!

If we can get the FAA off their butts this year 2001 could get VERY busy. The billion dollar US government project might give us something to do until then.

I think long-term thinkers might want to add to their position during the current employee selling before the window closes and the price starts to reflect the strong possibility of significant future business.
