Buck,

The reason some of us (including me) think that Ancor has a chance at EMC's business is that certain segments of the market are moving toward Fibre Channel, and away from ESCON. Ancor's Fibre Channel experience, especially in higher port count configurations should be able to reduce EMC's time to market for Fibre Channel products.

I have not researched this as thoroughly as usual, but I believe that McData's 32-port FC switch is simply two (or three, if you count the redundant unit) Brocade SilkWorm switches. Hardly an enterprise class switch with virtually unlimited scalability, especially when compared with the new Ancor equipment.

I do think that it is a mistake for ANCR supporters to assume that an EMC deal would encompass ALL of EMC. I think that it would be for a limited segment of their switch needs. (It might be a big chunk of dollars for Ancor, though.) I still believe McData will have the lion's share of EMC.

Craig
