No wonder IBM scooped up Mylex in a hurry last year. The small to mid-sized market sure is sizzling. Another vendor to watch is Seagate - still EMC's primary disk drive supplier.

Seagate already owns 85 million shares of Veritas. It recently closed its Xiotech acquisition that gives them some very interesting bundling opportunities in the small to mid-sized market especially if you also factor in the very aggressive way they have been seeding this market segment with its Business Intelligence software. IBM is packaging its NUMA server line (Sequent) with its own Business Intelligence software products in the high-end.

With Gerstner laying down a 6 month target for a company-wide pickup in Big Blue's businesses -- in addition to that marker against ex-Ibmmers including the most recent defector to Dell -- woe awaits the vendor who underestimates IBM.
