4.1.2. Home Network Requirements

DAVIC anticipates the proliferation of digital devices in homes will cause a need to distribute digital data between many types of devices in the home. This will require some sort of "home network". We do not expectthe home network to be a one-size-fits-all solution. Rather, it will be composed of several types of links that interoperate to form a homogeneous network built out of heterogeneous parts. The following aspects should be considered as a set of guidelines for any submission in this area whether it be regarding the HAN, HLN, or security. Responses should consider all information representation, and all protocol layers.

A sample of the targeted applications are as follows:

1.Security/Video surveillance applications
2.Client-server CPE applications (e.g. remote information access from a centralized home source)
3.Interactive video games.
4.Multiple EPGs being displayed around the house.
5.Internet access to many devices in the home.
6.Pay-per-view video content.
7.Control of device from many rooms within a home.
8.Control of device from outside the home.
9.Communicative Services.

Functional requirements are as follows:

1.Multiple consumer appliances per home (e.g. VCR, STU, PC).
2.Multiple service providers (e.g. HFC, FTTC).
3.Inter-room and intra-room communications
4.Capabilities for uncompressed or "lightly compressed" video transmissions between consumer
appliances.
5.Conditional access to content.
6.Target at least 100 meter runs.
7.Target at least an aggregate bandwidth of 200 Mbps.
8.Target at least eight simultaneous 20 Mbps MPEG2 streams.
9.Support for applicable security features (see below)
10.Target ease of use for average home owner.
11.Target evolution from simple to complex networks.
12.Target ease of installation and maintenance.
13.Must meet local EMC and be fit for purpose requirements.
14.Must meet local safety and regulatory requirements.

The proposed technology for these applications and requirements should to have the ability or the potential ability to succeed as mass-market consumer product. The proposed solutions may be part of the HAN or the
HLN or both despite the primary purposes as described below.
