CASIO & VODAFONE TO DEVELOP MOBILE INTERNET TERMINAL

Japan's Casio Computer Co Ltd said on Tuesday that it and British telecoms giant Vodafone AirTouch PLC had agreed to jointly develop mobile multimedia terminals with wireless Internet capabilities. The two companies plan to develop palm-sized mobile terminals that can access the Internet from anywhere by using Vodafone's worldwide networks.

The new product, which will have stereo sound and colour images, is expected to go on sale this autumn, it said in a statement.

Although the first product will need to be used in conjunction with cell phones with high-speed data transmission capability, the two companies aim to develop an all-in-one type terminal in the future, it added.

Terminal users will be able to exchange e-mail as well as pictures and voice messages, call up daily schedules and listen to news and music through the Vodafone portal.

The two firms plan to sell the products in Europe first and to expand to the other areas in the future, a Casio spokesman said.

Last December, Casio joined hands with Siemens AG of Germany to jointly develop palm-size personal computers with wireless Internet and mobile phone capabilities.

"The tie-up with Vodafone will be a bit broader in terms of product development. The alliance with Siemens aims specifically to develop palm-size computers equipped with Microsoft Corp's Windows CE operating system," a Casio spokesman said.

Casio shares ended on Tuesday at 866 yen, down eight yen or 0.92 percent.
