Hitachi 99/00 chip capex up 15 bln yen
TOKYO, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Hitachi Ltd said on Thursday its capital investment in semiconductors in the year ending in March will have risen 15 billion yen from the year before to a total 145 billion yen due to strong demand for chips used in cell phones.

Hitachi's shares ended Thursday morning at 1,600 yen, up 14 yen or 0.88 percent.

Hitachi produces semiconductors for use in GSM (global system for mobile communications) mobile phone standard phones, which dominate in Europe and Asia, a Hitachi spokesman said.

Hitachi, a major Japanese electronics and electric company, expects its capital investment on semiconductors in the year starting in April to be bigger than in the current year, the spokesman said.
