Re: The storage business

Of course IBM, CPQ, HWP, and SUNW are scrambling to beef up their storage offerings. The reason is very simple. According to Forrester, by 2003 75% of all enterprise IT hardware spending will be on storage. Storage demand is growing so much faster than anything else that it will shortly completely dominate the enterprise landscape. This is why I keep referring to the "post-server" era and why EMC is the ultimate emerging gorilla. The IT universe of 2005 will be completely data-centric and today's mainframe-class servers will be reduced to processing clusters which will compete for attachment rights to the Enterprise Storage Network. This is why it is EMC, not Wintel, that represents the biggest competitive threat going forward to today's server vendors.
