Rhetorical Shift in Latest Press Release

Janice,

You're right, I think. The revelation about the
preloaded Iomega software by the OEM on all PCs
wasn't the only encouraging surprise in that NEC
press release. As you say, their rhetoric has
shifted. Now Iomega is hinting outright that
they've turned the corner on their ambition
to supplant the floppy.

I'm not holding my breath on the Compaq announcement.
They have some face-saving to do, and I'm sure some
of the Compaq people have to go through some denial
about the failure of their bid to beat out IOMG for
that 3.5" floppy slot. They'll come around in due
course, not now. Besides, to do so now would be a
betrayal of those who made public commitments to
their backward-compatible device. One has to allow
for a decent interval here. It's a bit like
how one gently lets off a soon-to-be-ex-mate
if the person is sensitive, or how IBM looks like
it's going to have to let off all the OS/2 folks
eventually. It's also, I might add, how Iomega
abandoned those of us with 44MB Bernoullis: not
with a bang, but with a whimper. Any public
pressure on the subject at the moment would
just force Compaq into issuing strenuous denials,
the strenuousness of which is often an indicator
that the game is already over.

Cheers, Tom
