All The Humble One will attempt to impress the listening audience. Some of you may not know that my BSEE Alma Mater, Iowa State University, Ames, Ia., invented the first computer; and a few of you will actually not give a "hoot".

It says here: "The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) replica is a tribute to computing pioneers John Atanasoff and Clifford Berry, who designed and built the world's first electronic digital computer at Iowa State University from 1939 to 1942. To preserve the legacy of Atanasoff and Berry, a team of Iowa State University and Ames Laboratory scientists, faculty and students built an authentic full-size replica of the ABC. The replica was constructed in the basement of Spedding Hall on a 6-foot-long steel frame, incorporating original design principles that are still used in today's computers. The working replica was unveiled during a special event October 8, 1997, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C."
Tomorrow, by invitation of Iowa State President Martin C. Jischke, a group of select people will board the M.S.Queen Mary, Long Beach, Calif., for a special viewing of this treasure. This gala event will feature all the trimmings for the attending dignitaries: Cocktails, Dinner and Speeches (tributes for these pioners).
BTW yours truly will be amongst the members of this select group. This could turn into a fund raiser, but you too can contribute to Iowa State Univ. Just send checks to Ames, Iowa.
I wonder if Paul Engel or anyone else for that matter, had ever heard this computer?....humble eCarl |
