This turn-key Italian GSM network deal for Nokia is very good news. New digital networks in major markets are rare these days; and Blu will have to start implementing mobile data very soon to keep up with Omnitel and TIM. It's a good bet for an Italian 3G operator.

Nokia landed Hungary's new GSM network last fall as well - so the picture in brand new networks is pretty bright. These are GSM-1800-driven deals, where Nokia has managed to eke out a lead over Ericsson, which still dominates GSM-900.

Turkey is a key battleground this year - 2-3 new GSM networks are going to be launched in a country with 60 million people. The angle here is that Turkcell is a major customer for Ericsson. Traditionally, upstart operators have been very receptive to sales pitches coming from manufacturers that *don't* supply the current champ. This is why it's notable that Blu picked Nokia in Italy - since Omnitel is Nokia's major customer, there was a danger that Blu would have gone with Siemens or Alcatel for strategic reasons.

This is all a prologue to the new wave of GSM networks mushrooming across Eastern European countries, which have recently granted licenses to second or third operators. Nokia's task is to try to pick up something like 40% of the new deals, which seems doable after Italy and Hungary.

Thanks for patience - we now return to our regular programming.
