The cloth of the Shroud is woven in a twill pattern, just like blue jeans are. It's a hard finish, very durable, that's why they make work clothes out of it. That's why I said blue jeans, so you could visualize the material, but it's made out of linen, not cotton. As for the rest of it, all I said was that paint doesn't penetrate fabric, which is what I understand, and here is a URL to a completely innocent source which confirms my statement. Dyes penetrate fabric, paint sits on top of it.

I have no idea what the image on the Shroud is made of. I know that a lot of people believe it was made by a burst of energy when Christ rose from the dead or something. That is inconsistent with what the Gospels say, that the burial cloths were put to the side, but it's a nifty image and there isn't anything I can say that will dissuade true believers, which I am not trying to do. |
