The "simple" internet connection will require a PC, some configuration and other complications which are beyond the average consumer's grasp. I have COX digital TV which uses the SFA explorer 2000 settop box. An interesting feature is that the remote control has a set of VCR control buttons. Next to the buttons is a switch with positions labeled "VCR" and "VOD". Apparently, one uses these VCR buttons in a Video-on-demand application of the sort already demonstrated by Time Warner and soon to be commercialized in Hawaii. This system uses the explorer 2000 box.

Undoubtedly, the TERN system could support video at some level or another. However, whereas SFA would put 125 or 250 customers to a headend node, TERN system design guidance puts 2000 or so customers to a node. I doubt that the same level of video service is possible.
TERN and ther partners haven't worked through the issues and problems for delivery of video to a mass market.

This is what I am talking about when I say that TERN is offering a very limited set of capabilities to the cable operator.

I want to reiterate my surprise upon hearing that TERN is throttling their customers down to 64kB/sec. I also want to express my anger at their creative accounting in the recent earnings release. It is clear that there is much more R&D to do and that it should be expensed as it occurs.

In short, I'm very gld that I took a pass on this issue 1 1/2 yrs ago. The future does not look bright. BTW, I'm not short either.

[I am on my soap box because I've was taken for a ride by Ascend Communications some 3 yrs ago.]
