Just received Dell's latest brochure. Noticed that they offer as standard a 4.4 GB drives in the two lowest end Dimension desktop PCs. Maybe not too surprising except that these PCs list for $899 and $1129, the later coming with a 17" monitor and Pentium III. In my opinion, a drive this size is inadequate for a PC and people who buy one without opting for a larger drive may find thier PC obsoleted by the drive (just like I now find my old 166 Penium with 1.4 GB). Until my latest Pentium II with 8 GB, every PC I've had has been obsoleted by the drive.
I think this is a sign of desperation by Dell who is no longer receiving the earnings benefit of very rapidly falling component prices. They publicly stated when memory priced stopped falling (and RAM went up) that they would reduce standard memory to try to maintain profit growth. I think they are doing a disservice to the customers who don't know enough not to buy an inadequate drive and trust Dell not to be offering one.
