Here's another way to look at things, Bill:

FTU (or The Money Store) has to verify past employment of applicants for open positions it offers. In turn, others contact FTU (or The Money Store) to verify if one of their job applicants worked there and if so, to get a recommendation.

It should be a wash: Sometime FTU has to get recommendations for applicants and other times, FTU is asked to provide the same.

You and others might not agree, but I see a big difference between verifying employment information provided by an individual going for a loan (or mortgage) and two companies dealing with each other for employee recommendations.
