Hi Brian. It's been awhile. Hope all is well with you.
The following Bronson quote is very impressive:"Bronson said the chip equipment maker has been gaining market share and now has a "virtually 50 pct" share in all the markets its serves."

Here is the full story. Jeff

AFX (AP): APPLIED MATERIALS SEES CHIP INDUSTRY'S CAPITAL SPENDING UP 44 PCT IN 2000
97% match; AFX (AP) - Asia ; 02-Feb-2000 12:00:00 am ; 223 words

Applied Materials Inc expects capital spending by chip makers will grow by 44 pct this year, after an increase of 13 pct in 1999, CFO Joe Bronson said.

Bronson attributed the grow to companies expanding their capacity and installing production for new technologies such as chips based on copper-interconnect and larger silicon wafers.

Speaking at the Banc of America Securitries Tech Week conference here, Bronson said demand from DRAM makers should improve based on its forecast of a 3 pct shortage in supply following a 8.4 pct surplus in 1999, along with communication equipment sales.

Bronson said the chip equipment maker has been gaining market share and now has a "virtually 50 pct" share in all the markets its serves.

Citing the company's "quiet period" ahead of the release of second quarter to Feb results, Bronson declined to elaborate on the company's financial outlook, but reiterated its earlier forecast of 10-15 pct growth in orders and revenues of 1.6-1.65 bln usd.

Bronson said the company expects a shift to smaller geometries, or size of chip manufacturing, new materials such as copper interconnect circuits on chips and the introduction of manufacturing using 300 mm silicon wafers from 200 mm to fuel capital spending at chip makers.

He added that the chip industry is still in the "early stages" of a rebound.

"We could see some more peaks, but it's hard to call when the next rollover occurs," Bronson said, referring to the business cycle in the chip industry when supply when again overtake demand.
