Rumor; Shrs Rose 16% Thurs.

Dow Jones News Services

NEW YORK -- Shares of BBN Corp. (BBN) rose for the
second day in a row on speculation that the Cambridge,
Mass., Internet service provider may be a takeover target.

BBN shares rose 1 1/2, or 8.1%, to 20 1/8 Friday on
NYSE volume of 709,700 shares, compared with average
volume of 104,900.

The gains added to a 15.5% rise on Thursday. A good part
of Thursday's gain came in the last hour of trading, after
rumor specialist Charles Payne of Wall Street Strategies in
New York passed on a tip about a possible deal to his
clients.

Payne speculated that AT&T Corp. (T) could be the suitor.

Officials at BBN and AT&T declined to comment, citing
company policy.

Options trading in BBN on the Chicago Board Options
Exchange spiked Thursday, when 979 contracts were
traded. On Wednesday, 492 contracts were traded,
compared with 72 on Tuesday, according to a board
spokesman. He said the board has not opened a routine
inquiry into the options trading.
