Hi Geof:

During the last few days, Dave Horne and Mark
Laubach have posted great analyses of TERN on the
CMTO thread. Consider for example:

Another sightly irritating aspect of George Gilder's
reports is that he rarely acknowledges original
material that he draws from. He has been right on
in the area of optical networking, but his inspiration
can be found in Paul Green's papers. Paul Green
is one of the unsung heroes of the modern era of
optical networking. Together with Bob Price,
as a MIT PHD student in the late 50s, he invented
the Rake receiver which is now used for DSS CDMA.
Then in the late 70s and 80s, he was the leader of the
optical networking group at IBM before optical
networing was fashionable. His textbook in the early
90s is one of the classics of the field. He was traded
to TLAB when IBM sold its optical networking division
to TLAB.

Another poster informed me privately that Ultracom is
alive. Unless the combination of a big chip maker
such as TXN and a big cable operator such as T or
AOl/Time-Warner puts its weight behind Hi-PHY
in general, and S-DMT in particular, we are probably
doomed to stay with the current DOCSIS standard.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
