The write-off should not have been a surprise. They had been indicating since late last summer that they are building new DC's and installing new logistics processes and would err on the side of the customer because an inventory charge in Q499 doesn't matter in the long-run relative to the customers they gain. We are in land-grab mode and in this stage, customer acquisition and satisfaction is the name of the game and then the cash comes pouring in later. Investors who don't understand this are simply too short-term oriented or just don't understand the strategy. As I have said before, if you wait for earnings and the business model to be proven, you will be buying in at an $80 billion+ valuation. That is how it works in the world of competetive money management.
