There are about 200K English words in common use according to Bill Bryson, though the OED has about 615K entries. French has only about 100K and German 184K in use.
10K certainly sounds very limited. Especially given the amount of talking teens do with each other. When you listen to them, it's sort of alarming. They say You know, like, and Dude repetitively, almost hypnotically, before every phrase. I think it's so adults space out and stop listening to them.

Ammo did it for a while and we didn't know whether to treat it like a stutter and not call attention to it or tape his mouth shut. Then we noticed that he had two vocabularies, one for adults, one for his friends. Now that I think about it, he really has improved a lot. So I guess it's a developmental phase.
