Hi Joan:

While the company is loath to admit it, and while I still need a bit more solid evidence to go to print with it, I am certain that Intel is experiencing production difficulties at the high end of the Pentium spectrum. If one goes back over the past few months, there is plenty of evidence of other engineering/production difficulties (recall the late introduction of the rambus chip set. Then add on the fact that it didn't work even when it was delivered). If one also reviews past Intel "road maps", as delivered to their clients, it becomes very evident that the company has missed many of their own forecast shipping dates, particularly of late.

As noted earlier, the current shrink is a real stretch for Intel, and the Athlon could not have appeared at a worse time from Intel's point of view. All evidence points to a company that is pushing its current technology to the limits and suffering production yield problems for having so done.

Best, Earlie
