<<Newcomers should be encouraged to respect the analytical standards of G&K by reading the fm and monitoring our posts before they join in the conversation. IMO, the daunting barriers to becoming a Gorilla hunter have helped us to maintain our high standards of analysis and discourse.>>
Well put. One way of stressing this would be to point out that high thread bloat or low signal-to-noise ratio are worse than silence.
<<The best way for a newcomer to win their wings on this thread would be to participate in Thucydidies' Project Hunt.>>
Also true, but that's a pretty darn high standard, especially after the first few!
Those (like a certain witty yet technologically challenged member of the RT) who could never aspire to Hunt-worthy original presentations should still feel comfortable introducing themselves, telling touching stories about how their lives have been changed by seeing Lindy in a zoot suit, making fun of IDC, and so forth. They should just keep it short after that, or bring in derivative goodies from elsewhere.
As an example, here's a nice (way bullish) SSB report on JDSU with some thoughts on the "barriers to entry" question that I lifted from the JDSU thread...

PS while I respect the time, effort, and motivation behind Erick's project, I suspect that like the map in Alice in Wonderland, any thread index that is complete will be too unwieldy to use. What is needed, IMO, is a culled list of the best posts, not a complete list of all posts. |
