Re: MSDW IPO's:

When the Sycamore IPO was coming out, I cold-called MSDW (lead underwriter) and asked how an idiot like me could get shares. I was connected with the "broker of the day" (new guy who needs people like me to build his client base). This guy was *very* new. He had virtually no "index", which is MSDW-talk for the performance brownie points brokers accumulate. No index meant no clout in receiving IPO allocations from his syndicate manager. However, in exchange for my opening an account, he was able to wheedle his syndicate manager into giving me some shares. However, the pickings are slimmer now (e.g., no Avanex, but some Atmel secondary offering; doubt Webmethods) and I feel obligated to keep my account open. Still, it was nice...and his "index" is building...
