Six Taiwan Chipmakers Join Forces To Develop Advanced Technology

TAIPEI -- Six Taiwanese chipmakers Thursday said they have joined forces to develop next generation chip manufacturing technology.

The companies - Winbond Electronics Corp., Macronix International Co. (MXICY), Nanya Technology Corp., Powerchip Semiconductor Corp., Mosel Vitelic Inc. and ProMOS Technologies Inc. - have formed the Advanced Semiconductor Technology Research Organization in a bid to help them overcome the heavy costs involved in developing cutting-edge chip technology, said Thursday an official at Winbond, noting the difficulties involved for a single company to try and develop the technology by itself.

The newly formed alliance is due to begin operations July 1.

Most Taiwanese chipmakers currently license their manufacturing technology from industry giants overseas.

Last month, several big names in the chip industry - Intel Corp. (INTC), Micron Technology Inc. (MU), NEC Corp. (NIPNY), Samsung Electronics Co., Hyundai Electronics Industries Co. and Infineon Technologies AG - said that they would collaborate on developing next-generation technology for dynamic random access memory chips.
