A bit OT.

I thought the LOC had a lot of their collection on laserdiscs (the big ones).

FWIW, years ago and far away in another life my company bid on a big project (for a country in the Middle East) that involved computing. The bid documents specified that we had to print two copies of everything we did (in Texas) and immediately send one copy to the government ministry overseeing the work. Taken literally, the amount of paper involved would have required chartering a large jet full time just to carry it from our site to theirs. At that time I looked into a variety of alternatives for high-density data storage and transportation (this before the Internet was generally available) -- the system being used by the LOC was, as I recall, one of those alternatives. We sought clarification of the bid packet and were told none of the hi-tech alternatives were acceptable -- they wanted the paper. Reminiscent of the story about the large military transport planes which aren't capable of carrying their own documentation.

We didn't win the job. I don't know how the company that did dealt with the requirements -- I suspect they didn't bother and nobody noticed, but that's life. They did have the advantage that they were in Europe, closer to the Middle East, so maybe they used a train or something.
