As Schwab has proven the past few years, scaling to handle demand from hundreds to thousands of customers is one thing. Scaling to handle 7 million customers is quite another. All you have to do is read some of Dawn LaPore's (Schwab's CIO) interviews to learn about the inherent challenges involved in that. Obviously, based on Phillip's & Lon Gorman's comments Schwab has no intention of pushing their entire customer base onto CyberCorp's platform but on the morning of 2/2, what was/wasn't going to happen wasn't all that clear.

The only flakey thing I heard in the conference call was Phillip's contention that there was a cultural fit. If he truly believe that, I think Phillip is in for a big surprise. 10 years ago, Schwab had an entrepreneurial spirit. Its now become big and bureaucratic and that spirit is long gone. Let's hope Schwab does indeed remain at 'arm's length' so that CyberCorp doesn't lose its entrepreneurial spirit anytime soon.

Disclaimer: I worked at Schwab from 1989-1997.
